powercolor 0.3 installing instructions:

Use this program and scripts at your own risk !!!

These scripts are running only with gs 5.10 or higher. Also you need to have
apsfilter 1.1 or higher installed. (Tested only with the package "aps"
from SuSE Linux 5.2)

I have tested this program only with a HP Deskjet 540, 670 and a 690c, but
I think it will work with any similiar Deskjet.

- become root
- install your apsfilter for the printer with the device powercolor.upp
- extract the archive into a temporary directory
(it will make a own directory ./power)
- check on which interface your printer is connected. If you use another than
/dev/lp1 you must change the value of the variable "printer" in the powercolor
  or powercolor.8 script.
- run ./install.sh or ./install_tcl8.sh if you have Tcl/Tk 8 or higher
installed on your system. This will copy the files to the right locations and
delete a old installation of powercolor0.0 or powercolor0.1. Be careful, if
you have any own upp- files beginning with cdj_error or cdj_floyd in the
directory of ghostscript or in its subdirectory power they will be deleted !!
- check out your /etc/apsfilterrc for lines beginning with "GS_FEATURES..." for
special settings for your printer. Such settings are not necessary and should
be removed. You could get wrong printouts with such settings in combination
with powercolor. Also dont forget to check the user settings in ~/.apsfilterrc.
Normally these files can be removed from the home directorys. The SETUP
program from apsfilter will create a own /etc/apsfilterrc.powercolor.upp where
you must insert the following line:

PRELOADS="/etc/powergamma.ps"

- you need also the two files "align1.dat" and "align2.dat" from your printer
diskettes. These files are packed with the DOS-Software on the diskettes. I
will and cannot include these files in this package, because the license
agreement. But you could search on the Internet site of Hewlett Packard
(http://www.hp.com) for these files. They are included in the DOS-Software
for your printer. You must copy these two files into the /etc directory before
  using powercolor.
- thats all, now you can use as root the graphical frontend "powercolor" for
setting the paper type, the brightness and the rendering options for any
printouts and also for the alignment of the printer cartridges and a test
  print
- without using the graphical frontend you can use the *.upp files shipping
with this package (useful for a print server without X). These will not be
installed with the install scripts. Also these files have not the color
improvement of the graphical frontend. If you want it, you can write me, and
  I will include this.

Defaults:

- Rendering: Error Diffusion
- Paper: Plain Paper
- Brightness: 3 (Gamma 1.6)
- Quality: Normal

Restrictions:

- powercolor affects only prinouts with ghostscript
- runs only with gs 5.10 or higher
- you can only run powercolor as root, because it will set the printing
  parameters systemwide
- without Tcl/Tk (>= 7.3/3.6) installed on your system you cannot use the
  graphical frontend
- you must use apsfilter for printing
- powercolor sets the parameter always to the default values if you start it
- dont use the alignment function with a printer like the HPDJ 540 (with only
one cartridge installed). It produces not a usable result.

Todo:

- setting the gamma values directly in the program without the helperfile
  powergamma.ps
- rpm package
- use from user account
- talk with HP for including the align- files in this package
