1. What is BeroMail?
====================

BeroMail is intended for people with an expensive SLIP or PPP connection
(Telekom customers: don't give that dirty ***s any more money than
necessary... ;) ) as well as BBS Sysops who want their system to handle
their users e-mail connection without their attention.
It spools all mail sent (using pine or a similar program), and sends it out
when the connection is made.

2. How to install
=================

Installation is rather simple - edit the file beromail.h to represent your
server settings, then compile the programs ("make"), and use the
automated installation program ("make install" for first installation, "make
install.update" for update installations.)
Then, modify your mailer configuration to use /usr/bin/beromail instead of
sendmail. In pine, this is done by adding the line
sendmail-path=/usr/bin/beromail
to the configuration files. I recommend putting it to
/usr/local/lib/pine.conf.fixed.
If you wish to receive mail using POP3 or IMAP, you will also need to modify
the sender address for outgoing mail, so replies will be directed to your
POP3 server.
In pine, modify pine.conf or pine.conf.fixed to include the line
user-domain=your.pop3.server

To send the spooled mail out, use the "transfermail" command.
BeroMail will automatically detect mail for local users, and deliver it
automatically.

I recommend using BeroMail in combination with Eric S. Raymond's fetchmail
package, which retrieves mail from POP3 or IMAP hosts. The programs make a fine
addition to each other - retrieve the mail using fetchmail, reply to it while
offline, using beromail.
Pollmail expects the appropriate dip login script to be found in
/etc/connect.dip

This version of BeroMail comes with pollmail, a sample shell script for using
BeroMail and fetchmail to handle your mailing independantly. Putting pollmail
in the crontab for root works fine; another possibility is to run
"at CheaperPhoneTime -f pollmail".

3. Updates
==========
Whenever I make changes to the program, a new version can be found in the
ftp://ftp.startrek.in-trier.de/pub/progs/unix/net/mail directory.
If you wish to be notified of updates, subscribe to the mailing list
beromail@startrek.in-trier.de by sending a message to the list with
"subscribe" (without the quotation marks) in the subject of the message.

4. Changing the code
====================
You are permitted to change the program code. If you make any improvements,
please help improving the product, and send me a copy of your version.
You can contact me by e-mail at root@startrek.in-trier.de, or upload the
file to ftp://ftp.startrek.in-trier.de/incoming/progs/unix
Or, drop a message to the BeroMail mailing list,
beromail@startrek.in-trier.de

Ok, ok... The code is mostly uncommented...
I want it to be a true challenge for hackers... (err...) ;)

5. Copying
==========
The program may be freely copied as long as the copyright notice is not
removed. Programs based on this program MUST have a reference to BeroMail in
the documentation and (if possible) the program itself.
